ANTELOPE CANYON WITHOUT THE CROWS

GUIDE TO ANTELOPE CANYON THROUGH LAKE POWELL

Hiking Upper and Lower Antelope Canyon on Navajo lands have become very popular for its magnificent red rock formations.

However, most people don’t know that you can kayak to Antelope Canyon through Lake Powell and meet the bottom of the Canyon without a tour guide. It is far less crowded, you get to walk the canyon on your own, and free to take as much time as you want.

KAYAKING TO THE STARTING POINT:

You can rent the kayak at Lake Powel Marina and it takes about one hour paddling to the starting point where the water gets shallow enough for you to park the kayak and walk into the canyon.

The distance to the landing for the canyon hike is 2.5 miles and it takes around 2 hours paddling in the kayak while enjoying the cliffs of Navajo sandstone. The earlier you get on the water, the more you will have the canyon to yourself.

Since the lake is low, it is necessary to wheel the kayak down to the water over the gravel. Make sure you have enough energy at the end of the trip to drag your kayak back up the hill.

The waves from power boats on Lake Powell can bounced the kayaks, making people take unintentional swims, which makes the stability of the kayak an important factor to consider at the time of renting.

HIKING THE CANYON:

The Antelope Canyon hike begins at the landing. The first part involves walking over sand through a wide canyon.

The slot canyon, where the smooth undulating red rocks show their magnificent waves, begins after about 15 minutes into the hike.

There are several places to climb out of the slot to enjoy it from above and take amazing photography.

After about an hour, the canyon reaches a spot in the form of a fork where the left continues to a dead-end and the right opens up to a wider canyon, which a good turnaround point.

Please don’t forget to clean up, take lots of water, some healthy snacks, sunscreen and enjoy the magnificence of our amazing mother earth.
